Garden design in Penarth
Fifteen minutes over the Barrage from our yard, Penarth gives us two things Cardiff rarely does: sea light and salt wind. We design for both.
What Penarth gardens ask of us
The town's Victorian villas — around Victoria Road, Westbourne Road and the streets behind the Esplanade — come with generous plots, mature trees and, often, a century of accumulated levels changes. Our work here is usually about editing: opening a lawn back out, rebuilding tired terracing in proper stone, and replanting borders that can take the wind off the Channel.
Closer to the seafront, exposure is the design brief. A garden on Cliff Parade lives in a different climate from one in Cogan: we build shelter first — hedges, slatted screens, the odd wall — and then plant generously inside it. Done right, Penarth's mild coastal microclimate lets you grow things the rest of the Vale can't keep alive.

Do you charge extra to work in Penarth?
No. Penarth is a 15-minute run from our Pontcanna yard across the Barrage, so travel is built into our standard pricing. We have built more gardens in Penarth than in any area outside Cardiff itself — around a dozen since 2018.
What grows well in Penarth gardens near the seafront?
Anything that shrugs off salt wind: escallonia, griselinia and olearia for shelter hedging, then grasses, sea holly, crocosmia and salvias inside that windbreak. The microclimate is genuinely milder than Cardiff — we overwinter plants in Penarth that we would not risk in Radyr.
Can you work with the steep gardens around the Dingle and Cliff Hill?
Yes — sloping plots are our speciality. Penarth’s clifftop streets often fall two metres or more across a garden; we terrace with sleeper-and-steel or stone retaining walls and turn the slope into usable levels rather than decking over it.
